Second officer who's looking for a job a shore where he can deploy his nautical background. 

We got to know Samer as a cheerful, enthusiastic and friendly man who has been in the Netherlands for almost 2 years. When Samer was faced with the choice of what further education he should do, he consciously chose the Marine Officer studies. He saw this as an opportunity to see more of the world and eventually flee Syria. After completing the studies, he got the chance to work as a 2nd Officer. He served out several contracts and at some point his contract ended when he arrived in Moerdijk; Samer didn't have to think twice, he reported to Ter Apel to seek asylum.

On board, he gained experience in the following work:

  • planning the voyages and adjusting if necessary;
  • correcting charts;
  • LSA checks;
  • loading and unloading;
  • contacting with third parties to ensure a safe manouvre towards the port(s) like a VTS operator; which he enjoyed most of all the work on board.
Samer made the Dutch language his own, in a couple of weeks he will start with an official course to improve it even more (and faster).
